Mission. History. Supporters. The Transition House Mission Transition House works towards the prevention and cessation of domestic violence (DV) through education, outreach and intervention. To achieve our mission we provide long and short-term shelter/housing services, supportive services, youth violence prevention services and empowerment skills. Our goal is to provide these services in a diverse and culturally sensitive setting that supports and empowers families to choose lifelong freedom from domestic violence. We strive to dispel the notion that domestic violence is inevitable, to provide violence prevention education to children and adults, to educate the community about the realities of domestic and dating violence, and to offer viable and effective intervention strategies to other providers of services to battered women and children.
The History of Transition House In 1975, Transition House opened the second battered women's shelter in the United States, and the first on the east coast. Two survivors of intimate partner violence opened their tiny apartment to homeless battered women. Within weeks, the floors of the apartment were covered with sleeping bags and mattresses.
Understanding the enormous need for refuge for homeless battered women and children, these two women joined with other community activists in Cambridge to purchase a site for Transition House. Over the years, Transition House has sheltered over 5,000 battered women and children. Our Transition House Supporters We are very pleased to offer our heartfelt thanks to the agencies, organizations, corporations and foundations who help us to help so many wonderful women and children who need a safe and educational refuge, and who help us assist them with their transition to a life without violence. Your help is crucial to the support we provide to women and children in the greater Boston area and they too are extremely grateful for your generous assistance. Our Supporters in 2005 and 2006
