![]() The Haitian Outreach ProgramIn April 1999 Transition House, The Haitian American Public Health Initiative (HAPHI), the Haitian Coalition, and the Association of Haitian Women in Boston (AFAB) created the Haitian Roundtable on Domestic Violence (the Roundtable). The Roundtable believes this sophisticated partnership of expertise can best address the domestic violence epidemic in the Haitian community. The purpose of Transition House's Haitian Program is threefold. First, we are building capacity within local Haitian organizations allowing them to successfully respond to issues of domestic violence. Second, we have increased the shelter's ability to offer relevant services to immigrant women and children victims of domestic violence. Finally, we educate and empower the Haitian community and church leaders to help break the cycle of domestic violence. The Greater Boston area has the third largest Haitian population in the U.S., close to 50,000 people, second only to Florida and New York. Because the American feminist model of dealing with domestic violence is not culturally appropriate with immigrant populations, the Haitian Project reaches out to the entire family and its extended community to address the issues of domestic violence.
